The resource is used as a teaching resource and is shown on the big screen within the activity hall. The workout section allows the teacher to follow through the sections of the workout easily (Warm Up, Skill, Workout) keeping the children on task and on track. The skill and workout videos help the teacher to support good quality movement.

Fit for Life is so important for schools because movement and health is so important for our children.  4/5 children are not taking part in enough activity to benefit their health.  33% of Y6 pupils are overweight or obese.  We’re facing a youth mental health crisis.  Physical activity can help in all of these areas and we feel really passionately that through Fit for Life we can support a change in these trends and give our young people the best opportunity to lead happy, healthy and successful lives.

We have designed Fit for Life to be more that fitness.  Our workouts are designed to bring about personal development.  Whether that be a testing individual Tabata based workout that requires independence, determination and resilience to complete, or a team workout that requires speaking and listening, strategizing, working together and contributing positively to the team.

Fit for Life also supports the education of children understanding how to keep physically and mentally healthy.

Our overarching aim with Fit for Life is to help develop ‘happy, healthy and successful humans’.  We believe your children will benefit in the following way:

Happy

We know physical activity releases brain chemicals that make you feel happier.  Children will get a burst of happy chemicals which will boost their mood following a Fit for Life workout (See Research section for more details.

Healthy

We know physical activity improves both physical health and mental health.  Children should complete an average of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per day in order to meet the Chief Medical Officers guidelines.  We have designed our programme to be at the higher level of intensity to meet these guidelines.  We also include muscle and bone strengthening exercises which have been highlighted in the guidelines.

“If physical activity were a drug, we would refer to it as a miracle cure, due to the great many illnesses it can prevent and help treat.”  CMO Guidelines 2019

By taking part in Fit for Life regularly children will become fitter and stronger.

Successful

We know physical activity improves cognitive function.  We also provide workouts that are designed to support personal development, such as challenging workouts that improve determination and resilience.  Plus, team workouts that improve social skills and strategizing.

From an impact study we carried out:

  • 87% of children felt happier
  • 92% of children felt fitter
  • 92% of children felt more energetic
  • 66% felt more alert in class

following taking part regularly in the Fit for Life programme at school.

Delivering FFL

Fit for Life should be delivered in a practical space.  Our suggestion would be an indoor area normally used for PE, sport or physical activity.  In order to make the best use of the online resource the area would need a large screen which can show the resource from a laptop or tablet.  We would also suggest playing music during the workouts, so having a music system on hand would be helpful.

The workouts are not designed to be delivered in the classroom.

We provide online training to upskill teachers in the the delivery of Fit for Life sessions.  The online course has four compulsory modules:

  • Understanding the Movements
  • Understanding the Workouts
  • Delivering a Workout
  • Safety

Following each module there is a short test to check understanding.  Once all the tests are successfully completed, the training is complete, the teacher receives a completion certificate and the workouts unlock.

Any external deliverers to school we would suggest hold the Level 3 Personl Trainer qualification and complete the online FFL training.

The workouts are not designed to be delivered in the classroom.

Only if you want to!  The online videos of each movement will allow you to teach the workouts without having to demonstrate.

We’re keen to emphasise that our resource is a teaching resource.  One of our main focus points is good quality movement and building good movement patterns which requires individual support and coaching from the deliverer.  Our skill videos and supplementary resources give the deliverers the information to spot common faults in movement and ideas to correct them.  The resources support the deliverer to deliver high quality sessions with ease.  We aim to be more than plug and play.
