
Locomotion Movements
Technique
- Feet hip width apart
- Straight back, looking ahead, slight bend in elbows with palms facing forward, knees slightly bent
- Start squat by moving hips backwards
- Lower bottom below knee level, with weight in heels, knees tracking toes and back remaining straight
- As extending knees, jump feet out, elevating hands above head, keep slight bend in elbows and palms facing forward
- Jump back in to starting position
- Repeat continuously on the spot
Common Faults
- Arms straight
- Palms facing body
- Feet together
- Jumping feet out too wide
- Head down, arching back
- Uncoordinated movement
- Too deep in squat
- Not jumping feet back in for squat position
Corrections
- Demonstrate the correct movement
- Give verbal coaching cues of the correct technique
- Slightly bend arms
- Palms facing forwards
- Feet out and arms move up together
- Arms and legs move at same time
- If child is fatigued, resulting in poor technique, allow the child to rest or slow down until the movement can be executed with correct technique
